Company Have A Warehouse? Tips On Choosing The Warehouse Dock

If your company has a warehouse you need a place for truckers to unload their freight. In order to do this, you need to install a warehouse dock. Below are types of docks you can choose from, as well as factors you must consider so you know what will work best for you.

Types of Warehouse Docks

One type of warehouse dock is known as the flush loading dock. This is the type you will see in most warehouses. With this, the dock has an opening that is flush with the wall so it allows the truck to back into the opening and attach to the dock. This is beneficial if you do not have a lot of space, as the dock requires no space inside or does not jut out to enclose a truck.

There are also enclosed loading warehouse docks. With this, the trucker can back the entire truck into your warehouse. This would work well if you live in an area that has extreme weather conditions, such as cold temperatures or high winds. This is because the entire truck is protected inside. This is also beneficial if the freight your trucks carry has to be temperature controlled. If you choose this make sure you have enough space inside your warehouse. You will also have to install a ventilation system to remove the exhaust that comes from the trucks.

Another type you an choose from is the open loading warehouse dock. This type of dock has no enclosure but generally has a type of cover, such as a canopy or roof. Because there is no protection you do not often see open loading warehouse docks. If you live in a low crime area, have good weather conditions, and you do not have to worry about the freight being inside, this may work for you.

Things to Consider

One main thing you must consider is the dock door size. You need to ensure the door is tall enough and wide enough to handle the truck. If your dock doors are not, you can hire a company to replace the doors with dock doors that are of the right size. This will be expensive but will ensure you can take in freight from trucks coming in.

You also have to consider how the truckers approach your dock. For example, the surface leaking up to your dock should be flat. If there is an incline, some trucks may not be able to get to the enclosure without damaging the truck. If there is too much of an incline on your property you can hire a professional to flatten the surface out for you.
